Way before Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis and at a time when the guitar was linked to men and gospel music was purely religious, Sister Rosetta Tharpe managed to outplay many men with her guitar and to attract large audiences with her gospel-based lyrics, accompanied by secular-sounding music. Yet during her lifetime, she was rarely praised for her perseverance and her ability to break through any gender, musical, religious, or racial barriers. The church was founded by Charles Harrison Mason in Mason encouraged women to preach in the church. In , when she was 23, Sister Rosetta left her husband and moved to New York City along with her mother. Those were the first gospel songs ever recorded by Decca.

In the introduction, I mention my thoughts on the Independent Publishers Guild autumn conference and what we can learn from print-focused retailers. Plus, Audible expands into a Canada-specific site , Siri gets a new translation function in iOS 11, Google’s article on how publishers can use machine learning for translation of articles, and Google also launches a micro-payment app specifically for India , which I’m excited about as it bodes well for the expansion of direct-to-consumer sales via mobile.

Thanks so much for being up for this interview! What are you up to these days? Are you still making music? Working as a graphic designer in Dublin since I left Cork in the early 90s shortly after the band broke up. It was quite a surprise. But it also took some time. How did this release came to be? Javi contacted us a few years ago and suggested the idea of re-releasing our album.
So we discussed it and since I live in Dublin and Ian, the guitarist lives in London and the remaining members still in Cork it took a while for us to make up our minds. After that, we spent nine months approximately trying to source the analogue tapes which was a big ordeal since some of them could have been thrown out or lost.

These days, I constantly crave queer ass stories about queer ass characters. Give me soft butches in love and nerdy non-binary people saving the day; show me bi women solving mysteries and trans superheroes fighting against evil. Luckily for us all, there are some incredible indie game creators who are here to give the people what we want: I played two games recently that made my heart dang near burst out of my chest in very different ways: So many moments in this game are relatable.
The length is fairly standard for a visual novel, about three hours total, and I loved every second of it. In a lot of ways, Butterfly Soup is a classic coming of age story. They deal with pressure from their parents and stress out about having crushes; they fight with each other one second and joke around the next. But instead of focusing on a group of straight white boys, as so many coming of age stories historically have, Butterfly Soup is unequivocally Asian and female and queer.
Diversity is really neat. And when authentic representation is at the core of the story instead of a peripheral afterthought, you get something that feels real and specific and somehow also universal. I make jokes to cover up my insecurities, just like Akarsha.

By Adario Strange We’re celebrating human curation over algorithmic rhythms Now, years after the practice has become normalized in the U. Offering Wi-Fi is viewed as particularly problematic by some book retailers due to the practice of showrooming by many customers. Showrooming is the act of act of going into a brick and mortar store to examine a product in this case, a book in person, but then purchasing the product online instead of in the store, usually to snag a better deal.
Eliminating Wi-Fi also forces customers to interact with bookstore staff for information and recommendations, instead of firing up their GoodReads app. However, now that Amazon has begun rolling out its own brick and mortar bookstores , it’s clear that independent bookstores will need to resort to even more drastic measures to compete with the online book behemoth. This new stance on Wi-Fi by some indie bookstores may seem extreme to some, but in the long run, it just might save what little consumer attention is left when potential book buyers step through their doors.
This particular shop might not seem especially noteworthy at first glance, until you realise that it is situated in one of the most historically important towns in the UK, at least when it comes to video game history. Ashby-de-la-Zouch may be famous for its imposing ruined castle and its connection with Sir Walter Scott’s historical romance Ivanhoe, but if you’re a gamer of a certain age then the name will have a very different meaning: Rare’s original headquarters are just around the corner from Extreme Gamez, and store owner Stuart Benson says that during the time the studio was part-owned by Nintendo when it was located a little further afield, in nearby Twycross staffers would regularly visit to purchase sealed copies of the latest Rare masterpiece, to be placed in the company’s vault presumably Nintendo was rather stingy when it came to handing out free copies.
This changed when Microsoft took over but Benson reveals that some ex-Rare staffers – many of whom still live locally – continue to visit the store; Playtonic’s Steve Mayles and Kev Bayliss are regular faces. However, our recent visit to Ashby which is technically our local indie game store as well – we’re based 15 minutes down the road in Loughborough, Leicestershire wasn’t merely to chat about the store’s long history, but also to discuss a somewhat uncertain future. Just after Christmas Benson posted a rather worrying message on the store’s Facebook account which painted a dire picture; following “a hard couple of years in retail” changes were being made to the store’s loyalty reward system to ensure that it could keep trading.

History[ edit ] In the wake of punk , small record labels began to spring up, as an outlet for artists that were unwilling to sign contracts with major record companies, or were not considered commercially attractive to those companies. By , labels like Cherry Red , Rough Trade , and Mute had started up, and a support structure soon followed, including independent pressing, distribution and promotion. Iain McNay of Cherry Red suggested to the weekly trade paper Record Business the idea of an independent record chart to address the problem, and the first independent chart appeared in , published in Record Week, and later licensed to Sounds.

Earls Court Escorts Lovely ladies in Earls Court Earls Court in London has always been famous for its exhibition center, but the exhibition center closed in Looking around, you can see that the exhibition center was keeping this part of London looking a bit dated, but that is beginning to change. I have not lived in earls court for very long but I do rather like this part of London, says Tyna from Earls Court escorts.
It is about time it was well known for something else rather than exhibition. I did not have the best impression of the Earls Court area of London, and thought it was going to be about dating a lot of young guys. However, this is now becoming a nice district of London, and at the same time, more of a professional business district. Things are changing so quickly that it is almost difficult to keep up and know what is going on.
Things are changing for us as well. It used to be all about cheap dates, but that is not true anymore.
