Canadian Museum of Civilization Abstract Atlantic Canada has been home to native populations for at least 11, years. This paper traces some of the more significant human events and changing technologies as seen through the archaeological and geological record. Atlantic Canada was never a densely populated region, however it did support significant populations who were well adapted to the seasonal shifts in availability of resources from the land, its rivers and the sea. From the earliest Palaeo-Indian period, Atlantic Canada was not a region which developed in cultural isolation. Although there is regional specificity to varying degrees, whether it be stone, ceramic or bone industries, technological traditions often exhibit relationships to broader cultural traditions of Eastern North America. Introduction Our knowledge of the distant past is a construct based upon various related disciplines including archaeology, natural sciences, historic written and oral accounts. The archaeologist, in piecing together the events of the past and their context for hundreds of past generations, must draw from all of these avenues of information. Although the past rarely leaves more than material remains, usually found as lost or broken bits and pieces of once vibrant cultures, it is the people, their livelihoods and the social and physical settings that we attempt to recreate. These stories were preserved by oral tradition until they were written down some years after the events they describe. The existence of two versions of the story shows some of the challenges of using traditional sources for history, because they share a large number of story elements but use them in different ways. A possible example is the reference to two different men named Bjarni who are blown off course. A brief summary of the plots of the two sagas, given at the end of this article, shows other examples.

The sagas report that a considerable number of Vikings were in parties that visited Vinland. Thorfinn Karlsefni ‘s crew consisted of or people according to Saga of Eric the Red , 60 according to the Greenland Saga. Still according to the latter, Leif Ericson led a company of 35, Thorvald Eiriksson a company of 30, and Helgi and Finnbogi had 30 crew members.

An eye-opening introduction to online dating Opinion An eye-opening introduction to online dating When I skeptically started an online dating account, I wasn’t quite prepared for what would come out of the woodwork, writes freelance journalist Wendy Rose. Feb 14, 5: February 14, By Wendy Rose It’s in your hand. It’s never too far away. In a world growing increasingly dependent on technology, it may not seem surprising that quick and efficient text messaging is replacing the primordial phone call.

Wendy Rose is not that enamored of online dating. With the constant advancements in the field of social media, we no longer need to call someone to see how they’re doing, as we can read statuses and tweets about their lives from a device that fits nicely into the palm of our hands. Even though I grew up in a technological age, I fear we have become too plugged in. Call me old-fashioned, but a phone call will always win my heart over a text message.

But is it just the rarity of a phone call that makes it so special to me now? I have a hard time fitting tone of voice, facial expressions and body language into characters. What’s on my mind won’t fit into a Facebook status. Still, I participate in it.

Throughout the year, the country will be celebrating with dozens of events to mark the anniversary. When you break it down, Canada is one of the only places in the world where you can camp in the Rocky Mountains and eat maple syrup infused entrees in a sugar shack. Or where you can stay in a hotel made of ice in a beautiful, cosmopolitan city, and see moose, caribou, beluga whales, wolves and polar bears in their natural habitat. Or you can do just about every outdoor activity from scuba diving to heli-skiing.

And it all happens in the same country. Frankly, you could probably name one or two things you love about Canada.

The stratigraphic records in the drifts have been used to reconstruct variations in North Atlantic deep-water circulation throughout the Cenozoic; however, uncertainties remain about certain aspects of the timing, intensity, depth distribution, and regional impact of these currents. Here, we use an integrated dataset of seismic-reflection profiles and IODP core data lithology, biostratigraphy, and magnetostratigraphy to document sedimentation history and the development of current effects in the Cretaceous to present sedimentary record on the J-Anomaly Ridge and Southeast Newfoundland Ridge, offshore Newfoundland, Canada.

The Newfoundland ridges are in a key location, lying between well-studied areas in the northern and western North Atlantic and under the path of both the modern Deep Western Boundary Current and the Gulf Stream. From this time forward, drift deposition, interrupted by brief episodes of erosion, continued unabated. This timing for the onset of persistent deep currents is coincident with reorganization of Atlantic circulation inferred from a change from biosiliceous to non-biosiliceous sedimentation in the western North Atlantic Horizon AC and with the current-eroded Intra-Eocene Unconformity IEU in the northern North Atlantic.

A change in sedimentation style occurred within the Middle Eocene to upper Oligocene drift sequence, and it likely was related to a shift to deeper, more intense currents that eroded the widespread Horizon AU along the margin of eastern North America about Early Oligocene time. This development correlates with widespread Late Oligocene through Miocene-Pliocene drift accumulation throughout the North Atlantic.
